Commercial deadbolt locks can be operated by a key on the exterior and a thumbturn on the interior. Commercial deadbolt locks are used in cases where more security is needed beyond an initial locking handle. Deadbolt locks can have a single or double cylinder.
A deadbolt adds holding power a latch bolt can't, but the strike it throws into decides whether that matters. Shop Sargent deadbolt locks and mortise deadlocks with strikes, reinforcement, thumbturns and cylinders. In stock at Commercial Door Hardware and shipping the same day.
Deadbolt as a Second Lock, or the Only Lock
Sargent deadbolt applications split into two situations, and they call for different thinking.
|
Situation |
Hardware |
Considerations |
|---|---|---|
|
Deadbolt above an existing lockset |
Mortise deadlock or auxiliary deadbolt |
Keying must match the lockset; egress single-action rule applies |
|
Deadbolt as the only lock |
Mortise deadlock |
Opening has no latching between uses; not self-latching |
|
Deadbolt function within a mortise lock |
8200 or similar series function |
One lock, one key, one operation |
The third row is often the right answer and the one least considered. Where an opening needs both latching and deadbolting, a mortise lock with a deadbolt function gives you both in one lock case, operated together — which avoids the keying mismatch of row one and the two-action egress problem described below. Our Sargent mortise lock collections cover those functions.
For the general explanation of deadbolts, see our Deadbolt Locks and Accessories collection. This page is about specifying them against Sargent hardware.
Single-Action Release
This one catches people even when the cylinder configuration is right.
Many codes require a door in a means of egress to release all latching with a single operation. A door with a lockset *and* a separately thrown deadbolt may need two actions, turn the thumbturn, then operate the lever, which can be a violation even though each piece of hardware is fine on its own.

Where an opening is in a means of egress, confirm the complete hardware arrangement with your authority having jurisdiction before ordering. This page cannot determine compliance for a specific door.

-
Match the lockset below it, since a deadbolt and lockset on one door read as a single assembly and any mismatch is immediately visible.
-
On exterior openings, 630 satin stainless resists weather, salt and cleaning chemistry best.
-
613 oil rubbed bronze changes with handling, so a new deadbolt won't exactly match aged hardware beside it.
-
Match strikes and reinforcement plates where they're visible.
-
626 satin chrome carries the deepest stock.
