What a Mullion Does on a Pair of Doors
A pair of doors without a center post has nothing for a rim exit device to latch into. One option is vertical rod devices, which latch at the top and bottom instead. The other is a mullion: a vertical post between the two leaves that gives each door its own strike.
With a mullion in place, each leaf works as an independent single door with a simple rim exit device. That's easier to install, easier to maintain, and more secure than vertical rods, with no bottom latch to drag or collect debris. When the full width is needed for equipment, furniture, or crowds, a removable mullion comes out of the frame and goes back in afterward.
