The Sargent 8500 Series is built for the doors other exit devices don't fit: aluminum storefront and full glass doors with narrow stiles. This Grade 1 narrow stile rim device latches with a quiet single-point rim bolt, works on single doors and pairs with a mullion, and is available with 56- electric latch retraction and 55- request-to-exit for access control. Shop E, F, J, and G rails in mechanical, fire-rated, and electrified versions at Commercial Door Hardware.
Built for Narrow Stile Doors
Aluminum storefront doors are mostly glass, with a slim frame around the edge. A standard wide stile exit device either won't mount or hangs over the glass. The 8500 Series uses a narrow push pad and a compact rim latch sized for that slim stile, so the door keeps its clean, open look while still providing code-compliant panic hardware.
It latches with a single-point rim bolt into a strike on the frame, or into a mullion on pairs, which keeps installation simple and operation quiet.

Electrified trim (8573/8574) and electric latch retraction (56-) solve different problems. Electrified trim locks or unlocks the outside lever while the latch stays engaged. Electric latch retraction pulls the latch back so the door opens with a push or pull, which is required when an automatic operator is on the door.
Electric Latch Retraction (56-) on the 8500 Series
Adding the 56- prefix to an 8500 device builds motorized electric latch retraction into the push rail. When the access control system, a time clock, or an automatic door operator sends power, the motor pulls the latch back, and the door works as a simple push/pull door. When power drops, the latch extends, and the door relatches.
Because it uses a motor instead of a solenoid, retraction is smooth and quiet, which matters in hospitals, libraries, auditoriums, and anywhere a loud clunk on every cycle would be a distraction. The low current draw also keeps the power supply small and often allows power to reach the door through an electric hinge instead of a separate power transfer.

Request-to-Exit (55-) Rail Monitoring
The 55- prefix adds a switch inside the push rail that signals the moment someone presses the bar. The device still opens the door mechanically; the switch simply tells the security system that an exit is happening, so it can respond correctly.
|
What the 55- signal is used for |
Why it matters |
|---|---|
|
Shunting a door alarm |
Prevents a forced-door alarm when someone exits normally |
|
Releasing an electromagnetic lock |
Drops the maglock so the door can open on egress |
|
Starting a delayed egress sequence |
Begins the timer and alarm on a delayed egress opening |
|
Logging exits |
Records when the door was used from inside |
55- is most often paired with 56- as 55-56-8510, so a single device can both unlatch on a card read and report every exit. It can also be combined with 53- latchbolt monitoring, which reports whether the latch is actually extended, confirming the door is secure rather than just closed.

Available Finishes
Exit devices use BHMA finish codes, which appear at the end of the part number. On narrow stile storefronts, the finish is usually matched to the aluminum framing as much as to the other hardware.

-
630/US32D satin stainless is the default, since the push pad is touched constantly and stainless resists wear and cleaning.
-
689/US28 aluminum and BSP black suede powder coat blend with clear and dark anodized storefront framing.
-
613/US10B oil rubbed bronze pairs with bronze anodized storefronts.
-
Sargent 80 Series exit devices are offered in most standard finishes but not in 626/US26D satin chrome, so 630/US32D satin stainless is the usual match where locksets elsewhere are satin chrome. Availability varies by model; confirm on the product page.
