The WD8600 Series is Sargent's concealed vertical rod exit device for wood doors, with the rods hidden inside the door and the hardware kept to a clean push pad on the face. ANSI A156.3 Grade 1 certified and UL rated for panic and fire, available in mechanical and electrified functions and five finishes. In stock at Commercial Door Hardware and shipping the same day.
Why Wood Doors Need Their Own Series
Sargent builds the 8600 Series in three versions because the door determines how the device installs. WD designates wood door applications.
A wood door isn't a hollow shell like a steel door or an extrusion like an aluminum one. It has a core, stiles and rails, and internal blocking where hardware mounts. Concealed rods have to run through that structure, and the latch preparations need backing that will hold. A device engineered for a hollow metal door doesn't account for any of that.
So the first decision isn't the function or the finish. It's the material: WD8600 for wood, MD8600 for metal, AD8600 for aluminum.
Appearance Is the Point on a Wood Opening
Wood doors tend to appear where the building wants to look finished: law offices, boardrooms, university buildings, healthcare suites, hotel corridors. The door itself is part of the architecture.
Surface-mounted vertical rods undo that. Two rods running the full height of a wood door, with guides and brackets, read as equipment bolted to a finished surface.
Concealed rods keep the door clean. All that shows is the push pad, which is also easier to keep looking right, since there's nothing on the face collecting dust or getting knocked out of alignment.

Built for Paired Openings
The WD8600 is designed with paired door applications in mind, and that's where vertical rod devices earn their place.
On a pair without a mullion, there's nothing in the middle of the opening for a rim device to latch into. A vertical rod device solves it by latching each leaf at its own top and bottom, against the frame head and the floor. The pair secures properly and the opening stays clear, which is why this configuration appears on conference rooms, auditoriums, lobbies and corridor pairs.
Single door applications are supported as well, so one series can cover an entire building's wood doors.

Grade 1 is the highest commercial performance level under the ANSI/BHMA standard, measured by cycle testing and load performance. UL rated for panic and fire means the device is listed both as panic hardware and for use on fire door assemblies, subject to the specific configuration's listing.
Popular WD8600 Functions
Mechanical Functions
|
Model |
Function |
What it does |
|---|---|---|
|
8606 |
Storeroom |
Outside trim always locked; a key retracts the latch. Inside always allows egress |
|
8610 |
Exit only |
No outside trim, so the door opens from inside only |
|
8913 |
Classroom |
A key locks and unlocks the outside trim |
|
8915 |
Passage |
Outside trim always operates the latch; not keyed |
Electromechanical Functions

Function |
What it does |
|---|---|---|
|
8673 |
Fail safe |
Unlocks when power is removed |
|
8674 |
Fail secure |
Stays locked when power is removed |
Both electrified functions allow free egress from inside at all times. The difference is outside access on power loss. Fail safe suits openings that must be enterable during an outage; fail secure suits secured areas. Confirm the choice with your authority having jurisdiction.
Electrification and Alarm Options

AL |
Alarm |
Built-in alarm sounding when the device is used |
|
54 |
Outside lever monitoring |

|
55 |

Signals the access control system that someone exited |
|
56 |
Electric latch retraction |
Retracts the latch on a signal, for readers and automatic operators |
|
58 |
Electric dogging |
Holds the latch retracted electrically rather than mechanically |
On a rated wood door, electric dogging (58) is the route to free access during business hours, since fire exit hardware can't be mechanically dogged. Electric latch retraction (56) is what pairs the device with an automatic operator or a card reader.

-
US10B/613 and US10BE/613E bronze tend to suit wood openings better than stainless, since bronze reads as warm against wood rather than contrasting with it. The two are distinct finishes, so confirm which your schedule specifies.
-
US32D/630 satin stainless remains the most widely stocked and the practical default where durability outweighs appearance.
-
BSP and WSP powder coats suit contemporary interiors and painted frames.
-
The device is also compatible with a range of trim options and lever styles, so the outside of the opening can be finished to match the rest of the building's hardware.

Why Order the WD8600 from Commercial Door Hardware
Commercial Door Hardware supplies door hardware for schools, healthcare facilities, offices, hospitality and institutional buildings, carrying exit devices, locks, closers, hinges, continuous hinges, thresholds and seals from Sargent, Von Duprin, Corbin Russwin, Accentra, Schlage, LCN, Norton and Pemko.
Wood door openings are usually specified as a complete picture, because they're seen. A pair typically needs devices on both leaves, matching trim, top and bottom strikes, a coordinator so the leaves close in order, closers, hinges or a continuous hinge, and often an astragal and gasketing on rated openings. Ordering those together means they arrive matched in finish rather than assembled from whatever each supplier had on the shelf.
Everything in this collection is in stock at Commercialdoorhardware.com and ships the same day. If you're replacing an existing WD8600, send us the model number and the door size, and we'll confirm the configuration, trim, and finish before you order.
