Commercial Surface Vertical Rod Exit Devices from top brands like Sargent. For door heights of 7 feet to 8 feet, fire-rated or Non-Rated. Door widths are 36-inch, 42-inch, and 48-inch wide. Finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze US10B/613 or US32D/630 Stainless Steel. Both Electrified and Mechanical options are available.
Pairs of doors without a center mullion need exit devices that latch somewhere else. Sargent surface vertical rod exit devices latch at the top and bottom of the door with rods mounted on the door face, so each leaf secures independently and the full opening stays clear. Shop the Grade 1 8700 Series and the value-focused 3727 Series in fire-rated, hurricane-rated, and electrified versions at Commercial Door Hardware.
How Surface Vertical Rod Exit Devices Work
A surface vertical rod (SVR) exit device has a center case on the push bar connected to two rods mounted on the inside face of the door: one running up to a top latch that engages a strike in the frame head, and one running down to a bottom latch that engages a strike in the floor or threshold.
Push the bar and both latches retract together, opening the door. When the door closes, both latches engage again. Because the latching happens at the head and floor rather than at the door edge, a pair of doors can latch without a mullion, leaving the full width of the opening clear for people and equipment.
